PTE Answer Short Question

A short factual question plays; you answer in one word or a short phrase. Simple — except almost everything students assume about its scoring is wrong, starting with which section it counts towards.

The thing most people miss: this task is the exam’s great oddity. You speak the answer, but Pearson’s score guide lists its communicative skill as Listening — only. Its single trait is Vocabulary (1 or 0): there is no pronunciation mark and no fluency mark at all. So your accent, hesitation and delivery are irrelevant here — all that matters is that you understood the question and said an acceptable answer.

What that scoring rule means in practice

Once you know there are no speech marks, the strategy simplifies enormously.

The mistakes that cost the most points

1. Overthinking a 10-second question

The window is short and the question is usually simpler than nerves make it feel. Students burn the window second-guessing an answer they had immediately.

✓ Fix: say your first plausible answer. With 1/0 scoring and no penalty, hesitating is strictly worse than guessing.

2. Wrapping the answer in a sentence

“I believe the answer would probably be a thermometer” wastes the window and adds nothing — the scorer wants the word.

✓ Fix: just the word or phrase: “a thermometer.” Done.

3. Writing this task off as unimportant

It looks tiny — but it’s 5–6 questions of pure Listening score, and for many students Listening is the section that decides their target.

✓ Fix: treat it as free Listening points: a couple of practice sessions makes the format automatic.

Does Answer Short Question affect my Speaking score?
No. Pearson’s Test Taker Score Guide lists it as scoring Listening only — its single trait is Vocabulary (1/0), with no pronunciation or fluency marks. See the full task-to-score map.
How is it scored?
1 point for an appropriate answer, 0 otherwise. All or nothing per question, no negative marking.
Should I answer in a full sentence?
No — one word or a short phrase is exactly what’s expected. Sentences waste the short window.
What if I don’t know the answer?
Guess. A wrong answer costs nothing; silence guarantees the zero.
How many are in the test?
5–6, in the Speaking part of the exam (even though they score Listening).
