The thing most people miss: this “multiple choice” question is actually an integrated task — Pearson scores it for Listening AND Reading, one of only 8 tasks in the exam that feed two sections. No negative marking, 1/0 per question, so you always answer. The real test is stamina: after the audio ends you’re reading three or four dense paragraphs that all sound similar — and the wrong ones are engineered, not random.

How the wrong options are built

Recognise the three standard decoys and the right answer stands out.

The detail-blower: takes one true detail from the recording and inflates it into the main idea. True words, wrong emphasis.
The half-right: summarises only the first half of the recording and ignores where the speaker ended up — deadly if your notes stop early too.
The contradictor: matches the topic but quietly reverses the speaker’s position (“benefits” becomes “risks”). Reads fine unless you caught the speaker’s actual stance.
Your defence is a two-line note while listening: the topic + the speaker’s conclusion. The option that matches both is the answer; the decoys each fail one.

The mistakes that cost the most points

1. Choosing the option with the most matching words

Word-overlap is the decoy’s disguise — the detail-blower quotes the recording generously while missing its point.

✓ Fix: match the message, not the vocabulary: what was the speaker ultimately saying?

2. Listening without a pen

Four dense paragraphs later, an unnoted recording has blurred — and the half-right decoy is waiting for exactly that.

✓ Fix: two lines while listening: topic, and where the speaker landed. That’s the whole filter.

3. Re-reading all options repeatedly

The Listening clock is shared; cycling through paragraphs four times burns the minutes Write From Dictation needs.

✓ Fix: one disciplined pass: eliminate the stance-contradictor, then the half-right, decide between what remains, move on.
