A transcript appears with words missing; the audio plays once, and you type each missing word as it flies past. It’s a listening task on paper — in practice it’s equally a typing and spelling task, and that’s where the marks leak.

The thing most people miss: the scoring rule is 1 point per correct word spelled correctly — the same generous-but-strict rule as Write From Dictation. Generous: no negative marking, every gap is an independent point. Strict: a word you heard perfectly but typed as “goverment” scores zero. Most lost points in this task were heard correctly — they died at the keyboard.

The technique: hands ready, type the sound, fix it after

The audio won’t wait — but the gaps are visible before it starts.

Before the audio: read the transcript quickly and put your cursor in the first gap. You know where the words will fall — be waiting there.
During: type something phonetic in each gap as it passes — even rough — and keep up with the audio. Don’t stop to perfect a spelling while three gaps sail by.
After: the audio stops but the clock doesn’t — now fix spellings, using the sentence’s grammar to confirm endings (plural? past tense? ‑ing?).
Context rescues half-heard words: the sentence around the gap usually narrows what it could have been. An educated completion of “enviro…” beats an empty gap.

The mistakes that cost the most points

1. Perfecting one gap while the audio runs on

Stopping to fix a spelling mid-play trades one point for three — the audio doesn’t pause with you.

✓ Fix: rough-type and move. Spelling repair is what the after-audio time is for.

2. Leaving a gap empty because you half-heard it

No negative marking means an empty gap is the only guaranteed zero.

✓ Fix: type your best phonetic guess, then let context and grammar refine it afterwards.

3. Ignoring word endings

Hearing “develop” and typing it when the audio said “developed” — endings are exactly where rushed typing loses correct answers.

✓ Fix: in the review pass, check each gap’s ending against the sentence’s grammar. It tells you: “has been …” needs ‑ed.
