Reading and Listening tasks have objectively correct answers. Marking them costs almost nothing, so there is no honest reason to cap them — yet most platforms do, because the paywall is the product. Our objective tasks are auto-scored exactly and never capped: every multiple-choice question, every re-order paragraph, every fill-in-the-blank, every Write From Dictation attempt (there's a free auto-scored WFD tool here) is marked instantly, free, forever.

Speaking and Writing are different: judging fluency, pronunciation, content and coherence properly takes real AI computation, which costs real money per response. So on the free tier those tasks get a rough estimate, and the paid mock credits (one-time packs from A$19 for 3 AI-scored mocks — not a subscription) buy the real analysis. You practise unlimited either way; you pay only when you want to know precisely where your speaking and writing stand.

Speaking is dragging you down

Speaking is scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation — and pronunciation means intelligibility, not accent (no, PTE does not penalise your accent). The usual killers are long pauses, restarts and self-corrections. Read the speaking low-score fix guide, then drill Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Describe Image daily.

Writing form errors are costing marks

Summarize Written Text must be one sentence of 5–75 words; the essay must be 200–300 words; Summarize Spoken Text is 50–70 words. Break the form rules and you score zero on form regardless of quality. Practise to the counts until they are automatic — the word limits and timings guide has the full table.

Listening leaks points at the end

Write From Dictation is worth one point per correct word, spelling included, and it feeds both your Listening and Writing scores. It is the highest-leverage task in the test and the free WFD tool scores you automatically on every attempt.

Reading feels slow

Free practice vs AI-scored mocks: an honest comparison

Same questions, same timings — the difference is entirely in how Speaking and Writing are judged.

The free estimate is honest about what it is: a practice guide that tracks your trend, not a prediction of your real score. When you are two to three weeks out from test day and need to know exactly where your speaking and writing stand, that is when an AI-scored mock earns its money.

Practise smarter: hit the two-skill tasks first

Eight of the 22 tasks feed two skill scores at once. Free practice time goes furthest there.

Since the scoring changes of August 2025, knowing which task feeds which skill matters more than raw volume. Repeat Sentence and Re-tell Lecture feed Listening and Speaking; Write From Dictation feeds Listening and Writing; Summarize Written Text feeds Reading and Writing. Two more smart-practice rules for 2025–26:

1. Drop the memorised templates. Pearson's scoring now detects and penalises word-for-word memorised templates and stock phrasing.
