How long do PTE results take?
The honest answer — and why yours might be delayed

The short answer

Most people do not wait long — but "most" is not "all".

That speed is one of PTE's biggest practical advantages over paper-marked exams: because scoring is largely automated, there is no queue of human examiners working through scripts. But automation is also why a small share of results get pulled aside for extra checks — which is where the anxiety usually starts.

If it has been less than 5 business days, the most useful thing you can do is nothing. Check your spam folder, log in to myPTE directly rather than waiting for the email, and resist booking a resit in a panic. If you want to be productive instead of refreshing, take a free scored mock test and see where a second attempt would land.

What is normal at each stage after your test.

One trap worth naming: business days. Test on Thursday and "2 business days" means Monday, not Saturday. Public holidays in Pearson's processing locations stretch the count further. A result that feels late is often exactly on time once you count only working days.

Why results get delayed — and what "under review" actually means

Delays are almost always administrative, not a verdict on your performance.

When a result takes longer than the typical 2 days, one of a few known mechanisms is usually behind it:

• Human audio review. The AI scores your speaking from recordings. If you spoke very softly, very loudly, or your microphone was positioned badly, the audio may need normalising or a human listen before it can be scored. This is the most common reason speaking-heavy files slow down — and a good reason to nail mic position, something you can rehearse in our speaking practice guide and drills.
• Security and identity checks. Pearson runs verification on results — ID consistency, test-day irregularities, and duplicate accounts. If you have ever created a second Pearson account (even accidentally, years ago), that alone can trigger a manual identity check.
• Peak testing periods. Around university application deadlines and visa rushes, volume rises and the tail of the distribution stretches toward the 5-day limit.
• Technical issues at the centre. Occasionally the upload from a test centre is delayed or needs re-processing.

"Under review" does not mean you failed and it does not mean you are suspected of cheating. It means your result was flagged for one of the checks above before release. Pearson's own guidance frames these reviews as accuracy and security steps, not performance judgements. There is no published breakdown of how often each cause occurs, so ignore any site quoting precise percentages — those numbers are invented.

When and how to contact Pearson

There is a right moment and a right way.

1. Before 5 business days: do not contact them — they will tell you to wait, because you are inside the normal window. Check spam, and log in to myPTE directly.
2. After 5 business days: go to the Contact Us section on the official Pearson PTE website (pearsonpte.com) and raise a query. Have ready: your candidate ID, test date, test centre, and the email on your Pearson account.
3. If told your result is under review: ask whether any action is needed from you (for example, confirming a duplicate account). Usually there is nothing to do but wait for the review to clear.

Avoid emailing repeatedly or opening multiple tickets — it does not accelerate anything. And be wary of third parties claiming they can "release" or "expedite" your result for a fee. Nobody outside Pearson can do that.

What to do while you wait

Waiting productively beats refreshing your inbox.

Two smart uses of the gap between test day and results day:

• Estimate where a retake would land. If you suspect the test went badly, take an unlimited free PTE mock test now, while the real exam is fresh in your memory. Comparing your mock estimate to the eventual official score also tells you how well-calibrated your self-assessment is.
• Have a plan ready either way. Feed your target into the study plan generator. If the result comes back short, you start the next cycle the same day instead of losing a week to disappointment; if it comes back fine, you have lost nothing.

If your score matters for a deadline (university offer, visa lodgement), note that once released, scores can be sent to institutions electronically from your Pearson account — there is no extra postal delay.

Once your report arrives: reading it and how long it lasts

The wait ends — then the interpreting starts.

Your score report shows an overall score and four communicative skill scores (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), each on the 10–90 Global Scale of English.
