PTE vs IELTS:
the honest comparison

Both PTE Academic and IELTS are widely accepted for Australian study and migration, and both can earn you the same points for the equivalent English level. The real difference is format: PTE is fully computer-based with AI scoring and fast results, while IELTS uses a human examiner for Speaking. Neither is objectively "easier" — it depends on how you like to be tested.

The short answer

PTE and IELTS are both accepted for Australian visas and universities, and each gives the same migration points for the equivalent English level. PTE is done entirely on a computer and scored by AI, with results usually in about 2 days; IELTS includes a face-to-face Speaking interview with a human examiner. Choose based on which format suits you, not on a myth that one is "easier."

Same destination, two different journeys.

If you type quickly, dislike sitting across from an examiner, and want your result fast, PTE tends to feel more comfortable. If you'd rather have a real conversation and prefer human judgement over a microphone, IELTS may suit you better. For Australian migration, what matters is hitting the required level in every section — not which brand of test you sat. See exactly what those levels mean on our PTE score for Australia PR page.

Format: computer-based vs human interview

This is the biggest practical difference between the two tests.

PTE Academic is taken in one sitting at a test centre on a computer. You speak into a headset microphone, type your written answers, and everything is scored by an automated engine (with human review layered in since the August 2025 update). The whole test runs about two hours and many tasks are integrated — a single task can test two skills at once. See how that works across all 22 PTE task types.

IELTS tests each skill more separately and includes a live Speaking interview with a trained examiner, either on the same day or within a few days of the other sections. It runs closer to two hours forty-five minutes. IELTS is moving to a fully computer-delivered format worldwide, but the Speaking section still involves a real person.

Scoring scales: 10–90 vs 0–9

Different numbers, comparable meaning.

PTE reports on a 10–90 scale, giving each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking a granular score. IELTS reports 0–9 bands (in half-band steps) for each skill plus an overall band. Because they measure similar underlying ability, there is a published concordance between the two — a rough bridge that lets you translate one into the other. It is approximate, and the Speaking and Writing sections in particular need noticeably higher PTE numbers to match the same IELTS band. Use our PTE to IELTS converter to see indicative equivalents.

One thing worth knowing: for migration, your lowest section decides your level on both tests. A single weak skill caps you regardless of how strong the others are, so it pays to know how each task is marked. If Speaking is your worry on PTE, our fix a low Speaking score guide walks through the common causes.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

Honest answer: not easier — just different.

Neither test is objectively easier. PTE suits people who prefer a computer and typing and who freeze in front of an examiner; IELTS suits people who'd rather speak to a person. Your own strengths decide which feels easier.

PTE can feel less intimidating because you talk to a microphone instead of a human, and the marking is consistent and rule-based. But that same AI scoring can be unforgiving on pronunciation, fluency and pacing — mumbling, long pauses or an unclear rhythm hurt you more than they might with a sympathetic human listener. IELTS, by contrast, rewards natural conversational ability and gives you a person who can follow your meaning, but human marking carries a little more subjectivity.

People who do well on PTE often like structure, work quickly on a keyboard, and are comfortable following a predictable task pattern. People who prefer IELTS often value real interaction and dislike speaking to a machine. Both are valid — pick the environment where you perform at your best. Results speed and test availability

Where PTE has a clear practical edge.

PTE typically returns results in around two days (Pearson allows up to five business days), which is genuinely useful when you're racing a university intake or a visa lodgement deadline. IELTS computer-based results usually arrive within about three to five days. PTE also tends to offer frequent test dates and quick rebooking. If timing is tight, that turnaround can be the deciding factor even when everything else is a wash.

Australia PR: do they give the same points?

Yes — for the equivalent English level, the points are identical.

For Australian skilled migration, both PTE and IELTS map to the same English levels — Competent, Proficient and Superior — and each level awards the same points no matter which test you sat. Since 7 August 2025, the requirement is per section: every one of the four sections must reach the threshold in a single test, and your lowest section sets your overall level.

English levelPTE (L / R / W / S)Migration points
Competent47 / 48 / 51 / 54+0
Proficient58 / 59 / 69 / 76+10
Superior69 / 70 / 85 / 88+20

IELTS reaches the same levels at the equivalent bands (broadly, Competent ≈ 6 each, Proficient ≈ 7 each, Superior ≈ 8 each). Work your points with the PTE points calculator, or see how to chase the big jump on our 20 points for PR guide.

Common questions

Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Neither test is objectively easier. PTE suits people who prefer a computer, type quickly, and dislike speaking to a human examiner, while IELTS suits those who prefer a real conversation. PTE's AI scoring is consistent but can be strict on pronunciation and fluency, whereas IELTS uses human examiners. The 'easier' test is simply the one that matches your strengths and test-taking style.
What is the main difference between PTE and IELTS?
The biggest difference is format. PTE Academic is fully computer-based and scored by AI, including Speaking into a microphone, and results usually arrive in about two days. IELTS includes a face-to-face Speaking interview with a human examiner and takes a little longer overall. Both are widely accepted for Australian study and migration.
Do PTE and IELTS give the same points for Australia PR?
Yes. For the equivalent English level (Competent, Proficient or Superior), both tests award the same Australian migration points. Since 7 August 2025 the requirement is per section, so every one of the four sections must reach the threshold in a single test, and your lowest section sets your overall level. This is a score-threshold fact, not migration advice — consult a MARA agent for your situation.
How do PTE and IELTS scores compare?
PTE reports on a 10–90 scale and IELTS on 0–9 bands. Because they measure similar ability, a published concordance lets you translate roughly between them, though the mapping is approximate and Speaking and Writing need higher PTE numbers to match the same IELTS band. You can see indicative equivalents with our PTE to IELTS converter.
Which test gives results faster, PTE or IELTS?
PTE is usually faster. PTE results typically arrive in around two days, though Pearson allows up to five business days. IELTS computer-based results generally take about three to five days. If you are racing a university intake or visa deadline, PTE's quicker turnaround can be a real practical advantage.
Is PTE or IELTS better for Australian migration?
Both are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs and Australian universities, and both award the same points for the equivalent English level, so neither is 'better' for points. The sensible tie-breakers are which format suits you and which has convenient test dates. For eligibility and visa choice, speak to a registered migration agent and check the official government website.
