How Write From Dictation is scored

One of the highest-value tasks on the test β€” it feeds both Listening and Writing.

In Write From Dictation you hear a short sentence once and type it exactly. Scoring is one point for each correct word spelled correctly and in the sentence β€” so a few right words still earn marks, and there is no penalty for a wrong word beyond not getting its point. That's why finishing every word matters, and why spelling counts. This practice tool scores the same way: it checks each word of the sentence against what you typed.

Because it counts toward two skills, WFD is one of the best-value things to drill daily. See the full task-to-skill map, or the Write From Dictation guide for technique.

Tips to score full marks

These are our own original practice sentences for training your ear and typing β€” they are not real exam questions, and no test content is reproduced.

Common questions

How is Write From Dictation scored in PTE?
You earn one point for each word from the sentence that you type correctly and spell correctly. There is no extra penalty for wrong words beyond missing that point, so it always pays to type every word you caught. This tool scores the same way, word by word.
Does Write From Dictation affect two scores?
Yes. Write From Dictation contributes to both your Listening and your Writing scores, which makes it one of the highest-value tasks to practise. Getting good at it lifts two section scores at once.
Are these real exam questions?
No. These are our own original academic-style sentences written to train your ear and typing. We do not reproduce real exam content or use leaked question lists β€” practising memorised real questions risks your result being cancelled.
Does spelling matter in Write From Dictation?
Yes. A word only earns its point if it is spelled correctly, so keep a list of words you routinely misspell and drill them. Typing accuracy under time pressure is part of the skill.
Why does the audio sound different from the real test?
This tool uses your device's built-in text-to-speech, so the voice depends on your browser and operating system. It is great for daily ear-training; for exam-quality audio and full scoring across all tasks, use the practice app.
