How to Get 90 in PTE
The Honest Guide to a Perfect Score

PTE 90 is the ceiling of the test — the equivalent of IELTS 9.0 and CEFR C2. Here's what it really takes, and how to check whether your goal actually requires it.

What a 90 in PTE Actually Means

Before you chase the summit, understand what it is.

PTE 90 is the maximum score, equivalent to IELTS 9.0 ("9 bands") and CEFR C2 — near-native, expert-level English. It is genuinely rare. Getting there is less about learning more English and more about eliminating every small error the AI can detect: no fillers, no restarts, no dropped words, no spelling slips, no form violations. It is achievable, but only with near-flawless execution across all 22 task types.

The PTE scale runs 10–90. Pearson's official CEFR alignment puts 85–90 at C2 — the top of the framework. In the official July 2025 concordance, PTE 90 maps to IELTS 9.0. So when people ask for "9 bands in PTE", they are asking for a perfect or near-perfect score, and that framing matters: an IELTS 9.0 is famously rare, and its PTE twin is no easier.

First, Check Whether You Actually Need 90

Most people searching "how to get 90 in PTE" don't need 90.

If your goal is Australian PR points, the target is Superior English — worth +20 points — and since 7 August 2025 that is defined per section, not as a flat overall score:

LevelListeningReadingWritingSpeakingPoints
Competent47485154+0
Proficient58596976+10
Superior69708588+20

Every section must reach the level in one sitting — your lowest section sets your level. Note that Superior is not "79 in each" any more (that's the old pre-August-2025 shorthand); the real walls today are Writing 85 and Speaking 88. Run your own numbers in the PTE points calculator, and see the full breakdown on our PTE score for Australia PR and +20 points guides. If Superior covers your case, aim there — it is demanding but far more achievable than a flat 90.

Score requirements here are facts about the test, not immigration advice. Visa eligibility depends on your personal circumstances — confirm requirements with the Department of Home Affairs and, for personal advice, a registered migration agent (MARA). Note that at-home PTE has not been accepted for Australian visas since 7 August 2025 — book a test-centre sitting.

Is 9 Bands Possible in PTE? The IELTS Crossover

Yes — PTE 90 is the "9 bands" of PTE, per the official Pearson concordance. Here's how the top of the two scales lines up (these are approximate concordance ranges, not official equivalences):

IELTS overallPTE AcademicCEFR
7.0 ("7 bands")63–70B2/C1 border
7.571–78C1
8.0 ("8 bands")79–85C1/C2
8.586–89C2
9.0 ("9 bands")90C2

Many candidates who couldn't crack IELTS 8.5–9.0 do find PTE's computer-scored format more predictable — the machine rewards consistent, measurable execution rather than an examiner's impression. What Separates 85 from 90

The last five points are a different sport.

At 79–85 you can afford a few slips. At 90 you essentially can't. The gap is closed by four things:

How to Train for 90 (Without Burning Out)

  1. Score yourself honestly first. A full scored mock tells you whether you're at 75 needing fundamentals or 85 needing polish — completely different plans. Build yours with the study plan generator.
  2. Fix your weakest enabling skill, not your favourite task. At the top end, one weak thread (say, spelling under time pressure) drags multiple tasks.
  3. Record and review every speaking response. Count restarts and fillers per response and drive both to zero.
  4. Drill the eight dual-skill tasks hardest — they're where points compound. Our question types guide maps exactly which tasks feed which scores.

Be honest with yourself about the timeline: a genuine 85→90 push can take weeks of error-elimination work, and some strong candidates plateau at 86–89. That is still IELTS 8.5 territory — check what your actual goal requires before spending months on the last point.

Common questions

Is 9 bands possible in PTE?
Yes. In the official Pearson July 2025 concordance, PTE 90 corresponds to IELTS 9.0 — the '9 bands' of PTE. It represents CEFR C2, near-native proficiency, and it is genuinely rare. Scores of 86–89 map to IELTS 8.5, which already exceeds almost every university and visa requirement.
Is PTE 90 harder than IELTS 9.0?
They sit at the same level in the official concordance, but the paths differ. PTE is fully computer-scored, so it rewards consistent, measurable execution — no restarts, perfect spelling, strict form compliance — while IELTS 9.0 depends on human examiner judgement. Many candidates find PTE's predictability easier to train for, but neither is easy.
Do I need 90 in PTE for Australian PR?
No. The maximum points level is Superior English (+20 points), which since 7 August 2025 means Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88 — every section in one test. That is demanding but well below a flat 90. Check your target with a points calculator and confirm eligibility questions with official sources or a registered migration agent.
What usually stops people getting from 85 to 90?
Small execution errors rather than English level: fillers and restarts in Speaking, dropped or misspelt words in Write From Dictation and Repeat Sentence, form violations like a two-sentence Summarize Written Text, and template-style writing, which Pearson's AI now detects and penalises. The last five points come from eliminating errors, not adding vocabulary.
Does my accent stop me getting 90 in Speaking?
No. PTE scores pronunciation on intelligibility — whether your words are clearly understandable — not on how close your accent is to a native speaker's. Candidates with clear Indian, Nepali or other accents score 90 in Speaking. Focus on clarity, word stress and smooth fluency rather than imitating an accent.
How long does it take to prepare for PTE 90?
It depends entirely on your starting point. If a scored mock puts you at 83–86, a focused few weeks of error-elimination can be enough. From the mid-70s, expect a longer build on fundamentals first. Take a scored practice test before setting a timeline, and be prepared for the possibility of plateauing in the high 80s.
