How to Get 79 in PTE — and What 79 Actually Buys You in 2026
PTE 79 is the classic "8 bands" target — but the rules around it changed in August 2025, and most advice online hasn't caught up. Here's the honest version, mapped to how each task is actually scored.
Is 79 in PTE really "8 bands"?
Yes — approximately. Here's exactly where 79 sits on the IELTS and CEFR scales.
PTE 79 is the entry point of the IELTS 8.0 range. Pearson's official July 2025 concordance maps IELTS 8.0 to PTE 79–85 overall, so "8 bands in PTE" is roughly 79 or above. On the CEFR scale, 76–84 is C1 — so 79 is a solid C1 result. These are approximate concordance ranges, not official one-to-one equivalences, but they're what universities and employers use in practice.
That's why 79 remains one of the most-searched PTE targets: it's the number many top universities ask for, and it's the old shorthand for Australia's highest English level. The myth to unlearn: "79 in each" is no longer Superior
If a blog or coach tells you 79 in every section earns +20 Australian points, they're working from pre-August-2025 rules.

Notice what that means for a "79 each" scorer: your Listening and Reading are comfortably above the Superior line, but Writing 79 and Speaking 79 are below it. How big is the jump from 65 to 79? Honestly — big.
65 to 79 is not "a bit more practice." It's the difference between good English and near-native precision under time pressure.
At 65, the scoring engine forgives scattered errors. At 79, it doesn't. Roughly speaking, you need near-full marks on every objective task (fill-in-the-blanks, dictation, multiple choice) so that the AI-scored productive tasks — where nobody scores perfectly — only have to carry you the last few points. Plan for weeks of daily, targeted work, not a weekend of tips videos. Where 79 seekers actually lose marks
In our experience, candidates stuck at 70–76 lose the same predictable points.
WFD spelling and small words. Dictation is scored per word — dropped articles, wrong plurals and misspellings quietly bleed both Listening and Writing. Drill it with our auto-scored WFD practice.
Essay and summary form. The essay must be 200–300 words; SWT must be one sentence of 5–75 words; SST must be 50–70 words. Form violations cap otherwise strong writing — check the full list in word limits and timings.
Wild guessing on multi-answer questions. Negative marking applies only to multi-answer MCQs (Reading and Listening) and Highlight Incorrect Words — pick only what you're confident in there, but never leave anything else blank, because nothing else is penalised. Over-templating Speaking and Writing. Pearson's AI now detects and penalises memorised templates and high-frequency stock phrasing. A framework for organising ideas is fine; reciting the same rehearsed sentences is a scoring risk at exactly the level where you can't afford one. Speaking is scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation — meaning intelligibility, not accent — so smooth, natural delivery beats a perfect script delivered robotically.
Fluency panic. At 79, hesitations, restarts and self-corrections cost more than an occasional imperfect word choice. Keep talking, keep even pacing.
A realistic routine for 8 bands in PTE
Structure beats volume. A focused 90 minutes a day outperforms unfocused three-hour sessions.
Baseline honestly. Take a full scored mock and find your weakest section — that section sets your result.
Max the objective tasks first. Fill-in-the-blanks, MCQs, Highlight tasks: these should be near-perfect before test day.
Daily two-skill reps. WFD and Repeat Sentence every single day; SWT/SST several times a week with strict form discipline.
Speak out loud daily. Fluency is a motor skill. Record yourself, listen back for hesitations and flat pacing.
Weekly mock, then adjust. Re-target your weakest task each week rather than repeating what's already comfortable.
